United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today demanded that Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr and the Egyptian government adhere to the international treaties and agreements that protect vital Israeli institutions and interests in Egyptian territory. Secretary of State Clinton reportedly placed a phone call to Foreign Minister Amr yesterday to stress the necessity of committing to international obligations under diplomatic treaties, specifically the protection of diplomatic institutions, reported Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronot and Channel Two of Israeli Television. The U.S. diplomat demanded that the Egyptian government intervene to protect the Israeli embassy in Cairo. The Israeli embassy is a diplomatic area that must be protected by the host country, she added. The Israeli Foreign Ministry announced a state of emergency, reported Israeli media. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Libraman summoned senior officials from the ministry to form an emergency committee that will be charged with discussing and strategizing about recent incidents in Cairo at the Israeli embassy. U.S. President Barack Obama spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday to discuss the troubling events at the embassy. He allegedly promised Netanyahu that the U.S. will intervene to ameliorate the situation and prevent violence.
