The “We Are All Khaled Said” page on the social networking website Facebook collected 160,000 EGP (U.S. $27,000) in aid to Somalia in less than 48 hours after launching an initiative to collect donations. The Federation of Arab Doctors and Alexandrians Without Borders launched the charity drive with an initial goal of collecting 100,000 EGP (U.S. $16,000) during the three days of the Eid al-Fitr feast. With the assistance of mobile companies, donors contributed by sending text messages that would donate 5 EGP (U.S. $0.84) per message. The Eid al-Fitr feast celebrates the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan, when it is obligatory for Muslims to fast from sunup to sun down. Within the first seven hours, the initiative collected over 64,000 EGP (U.S. $11,000) before reaching 160,000 EGP in less than 48 hours.
