Egypt will open the first international medical center specializing in care for road accidents. Prime Minister Essam Sharaf has met with German experts regarding establishing a specialized center to treat road accident victims. Sharaf held a meeting with some German experts earlier this morning in order to discuss establishing the medical center for road accidents. Each year, Egyptian road accidents kill 12,000 and injury 50,000, among the highest rates in the world. Egypt's Minister of Health, Amr Hilmi, held a press conference after the Prime Minister's meeting. Hilmi said the Egyptian government will provide about 20 percent of the cost of the center by providing the construction site, while the German government will provide technical support and training for Egyptian doctors. The first phase of the center will cost 473 million EGP (U.S. $80 million). Egyptian donations in Germany and other European countries will cover costs. "Egypt has delayed the center for five years because of widespread corruption in former regime," said Dr. Sami Salem, member of German doctors league.
