Arable land in Egypt increased by 1.7 percent and cultivable land increased by 2.4 percent over the past five years, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAMPAS). Egypt's arable land area reached 8.6 million feddan (8.3 million acres), with a 65 percent majority lying in the Egyptian Delta. Upper Egyptian and border governorates hosted 2.6 million feddan (2.5 million acres), or 30.2 percent of agricultural land. Urban governorates contain 400,000 feddan (385,000 acres), or 4.7 percent or arable land. CAMPAS said that 7 million feddan (6.7 million), or 81.4 percent of arable land was privately owned: 4.5 million feddan (4.3 million acres) in the Egyptian Delta, 2.2 million (2.1 million acres) in Upper Egyptian and border governorates, and 300,000 feddan (289,000 acres) in Urban areas.
