WASHINGTON: The spokeswoman of the U.S. Department of State, Victoria Nuland, praised the steps taken by Egypt's government to remove the Emergency Law on Friday. She said, "It is a good decision. The U.S. has demanded removing the emergency law for a long time." Egypt has been under the Emergency Law, essentially a version of martial law, for the past 30 years. One of the promises of Egypt's ruling military council in the wake of the January 25 Revolution was to remove the Emergency Law before holding parliamentary or presidential elections. Regarding the scheduled date of the arrival of the new U.S. ambassador to Cairo, Nuland said Ambassador Ann Patterson arrived in Cairo on August 1 but she hasn't submitted her credentials yet. Nuland said Patterson is scheduled to submit her credentials in the next week.
