SHARQIYA, Egypt: Police officers and low-ranking policemen started a strike after an officer whipped a policeman in al-Asher police station in Sharqiya. The officers and policemen organized a protest outside the police station until Gen. Mohamed Nasser, security commander of the city, arrived. Hossam Abdoul Hamid said he was whipped because he refused to transport a group of policemen to an area outside his job. “I will continue this strike until I see this police officer whipped before my eyes,” he said. “The office beat me, slapped me on the face and whipped me because I did not agree to transport five policemen to their patrol station,” he said. Hamid said he drove the men after they missed their transport vehicle, but they mocked him and told him to drive them further inside their patrol area. He refused, saying this is not his job, and instead drove them back to al-Asher police station. “When the police officer found that I refused to transport them, he slapped by a whipped me like I'm some kind of animal,” said Hamid. He said the officer “put an electric shock device in my nose” after he refused to transport them again. The policemen surrounded the officer's car to ensure he would not leave until the city's security head arrived at the station.
