A security source revealed Israel interfered to prevent Spain from surrendering Hussien Salem to Egypt. International law experts ruled out that Egypt will have Salem back, especially after Salem abandoned his Egyptian citizenship. Sources told Youm7 Israeli officials expressed their anxiety after the Spanish authorities announced Salem's arrest on Thursday. Hussein Salem is the businessman involved in corruption crimes during the former regime and a main partner in the Middle East Gas Company and responsible for illegally exporting Egyptian gas to Israel. Sources recognized Israel's pressure to save Salem since he had an important role in dealing with providing Egyptian gas to Israel at low prices. Sources added Salem received high commissions after concluding deals during Mubarak's term. Sources revealed two officers from Egyptian Interpol headed to Madrid to discuss the issue with Spanish authorities to transfer Salem to Egypt for investigations. But the mission was difficult when he abandoned his Egyptian citizenship. Salem will be prosecuted in front of the Spanish courts, as a Spanish citizen, in the charge of money laundering. Spanish authorities arrested Salem and his son on Thursday and confiscated 33 million Euros (U.S. $47 million) from his accounts, in addition to other properties seized by the Spanish National Court.
