Tens of teachers organized a strike in Tahrir Square today, Friday, demanding the formation of a parliament of teachers that will participate with experts and officials in drawing educational policies, amending laws, establishing an authority for pre-university education and amending salaries. They demanded a minimum wage of 400 EGP (U.S. $67) for workers, 1,200 EGP (U.S. $203) for employees who have intermediate certificates and 1,500 EGP (U.S. $254) for employees who have excelled certificates. The teachers said their demands are not unrealistic. They added that they have not threatened to boycott supervising exam committees in high schools if their demands are not met. They warned, however, that if the cabinet and the Minister of Education do not respond to their demands, their actions will in turn escalate.
