The increasing prices of chicken feed led to notable losses of the poultry producers, said Nabil Darwish, the head of the General Union of the Poultry Producers. He said the price of maize rose about 1,000 EGP (U.S. $169) per ton over the past year. Maize is now 2,300 EGP (U.S. $390) per ton while it was 1300 EGP (U.S. $220) in 2010. Darwish also highlighted the notable increase in the price of soybeans. Soybeans have hit 2,850 EGP (U.S. $483) per ton in 2011, while they were 2,300 EGP (U.S. $390) in 2010. Darwish said the price of white chickens has settled at 10.5 EGP (U.S. $1.77) per kilo in the farms, while a pack of eggs reached 13 EGP (U.S. $2.20). The chick price ranges between 1-1.2 EGP (U.S. $0.17-0.20).
