Thursday's talk shows
Published in Youm7 on 21 - 05 - 2011

Overview:
Most talk shows on Thursday night were cautiously monitoring the incidents in Ain Shams, fearing they could escalate into full-blown sectarian strife as happened in Imbaba two weeks ago. Also up for discussion was the continuation of Doctor's Union head Hamdy el Sayed's attack on doctors who were inciting their colleagues to join in the nationwide strike. A third topic was the general call for the return of security to Egypt's streets and the Ministry of Interior's decision to bring back neighborhood defense units to aid in keeping the streets safe.
Al Hayah el Youm
News covered by el Hayah included:
• The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces announcement that it will issue a new law regarding political rights without addressing the issue of a new electoral system
• President Obama exempting Egypt from $1 billion worth of debt and offering an equal amount in loans
The main segment was about the problems of doctors in Egypt and the reasons behind the nationwide strike. The head of the Doctors Union, Hamdy el-Sayed, was a guest. Dr el-Sayed said the strike is immoral and illegal and that the doctors should wait to have their demands met. One of the organizers of the strike, Rashwan Shabaan, called the program and accused el-Sayed of being part of the former regime.
AAL Hawa (On air)
Gamal Ennayet, the show's host, interviewed journalist and thinker Louis Greisse about his experiences as a writer who has lived through the regimes of three Egyptian presidents and who witnessed the 25 January revolution, with a particular focus on how each regime dealt with the press and the media .
Al-Hayah w el-Nas (People and Life)
The news covered by al-Hayah w el-Nas included:
• Clashes between Copts and Muslims in the Ain Shams district and how this caused the postponement of the Maspiro protests
• Al-Qaeda releases voice recording in which Osama Bin Laden praises the Egyptian revolution
• Campaign by the Ministry of Health to prevent the growing of tobacco in Egypt
The main segment was an interview with Dr Samir Morcos, a prominent Coptic writer and thinker, regarding the events in Ain Shams and sectarian strife in general. 12 people were arrested over clashes between Muslims and Coptic Christians regarding the reopening of a church in Ain Shams closed since 2008.
Wahed men el-Nas (One of the People)
Main news covered by Wahed men el-Nas included :
• The village of Bahr el-Bakar in the Sharkiya Governorate want to resolve the mystery of why the only hospital in their village has not been opened yet despite being built and equipped
• Students at the Modern International University in 6 October governorate have concerns regarding their university since it was reportedly owned by the former prime minister
• 16,000 Citizens of the Sharfa area are suffering from the effects of water pollution
There were two segments: the first was an account of the experiences of the father of a paralyzed son. The second discussed the problems of Nubians in Egypt, especially the destruction of Old Nubia as a result of building the High Dam in Aswan.
