Israeli media published reports that Israel is currently in mourning over the end of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's regime. Most Israelis reportedly consider Mubarak “a faithful Zionist” for being Israel's closest ally and providing of a sense of security to Israel for the 30 years of his rule. The Jerusalem Post was the first to publish reports that Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu and his government made great efforts to help Mubarak maintain his grip on power. However, Egypt's January 25 Revolution stopped Israel's efforts and it is currently trying to adjust to Egypt's new political reform. Israeli media said many of Mubarak's opponents described him as a Zionist because of his efforts to maintain good relations with Israel, although this angered many Egyptians because the term ‘Zionist' is considered a derogative slur among Arab nations. Mubarak's peaceful relations with the Israeli government permitted Israeli citizens to visit Egypt as tourists and facilitate business deals between Israel and Arab countries. Mubarak also put effort into freeing Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who was kidnapped by the Palestinian Hamas faction in 2006. Mubarak disapproved of Hamas and its operations carried out as resistance against the Israelis, calling such operations “terrorism.” According to Israeli press, Israel is currently distraught over Mubarak's loss of power and considers the U.S.'s insistence that Mubarak resign to be an act of treachery against Israel. Israeli media said some Israelis refuse to call Mubarak ‘Zionist' because they consider the title too strong to be used on anyone. Mubarak failed to prevent Egyptians from imposing a ‘cold peace' with Israel, it said. However, most of Israelis still appreciate Mubarak and are even fond of him for strengthening relations with Israel and supporting peace with Israel.
