Arabic: احمد الطيب Ahmed al-Tayeb is the Imam of Al-Azhar Mosque, appointed by former President Hosni Mubarak in 2010 after the death of his predecessor, Mohamed Tantawy. When Mubarak was ousted in February, Al-Azhar's youth protested for its independence from the government and demanded al-Tayeb's resignation. Protesters demanded to remove all appointed positions and to choose an Imam and other figures through elections. Al-Tayeb left the campus and went to the headquarters of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to meet with its head, Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi. Tayeb submitted his resignation to Tantawi, who refused the resignation and said Egypt is going through change and called for patience. It was the second time Tayeb's resignation was denied by the government. Tayeb is criticized by some Coptic Christians and Al-Azhar youth.
