Mohamed Zidan's Borussia Dortmund threw away their lead to lose 2-1 to Schalke on Friday and miss out on the chance of putting pressure on fourth-placed Hamburg in the Bundesliga. The visitors took the lead three minutes after the restart through a penalty from Turkish midfielder Nuri Sahin. They couldn't hold onto their advantage though, with Benedikt Howedes equalizing for Schalke in the 66th minute with a neat header. Croatian forward Ivan Rakitic gave Schalke all three points when he struck home with six minutes remaining. Egypt forward Mohamed Zidan, who was included in Dortmund's starting line-up, prevented Schalke from opening the scoring in the 27th minute when he cleared a header from Marcelo Bordon off the line. He was replaced in the 72nd minute, making way for Hungarian midfielder Tamas Hajnal. Dortmund, who are aiming to book a place in next season's Europa League, are fifth with 39 points, one behind Hamburg who could extend the gap if they beat joint leaders Bayern Munich on Sunday. Jurgen Klopp's side should at least be able to finish fourth to play in Europe's secondary competition.
