Costa Rica atoned for their 5-0 defeat to Brazil to outclass 10-man Australia 3-0 and revive their hopes of reaching the U-20 World Cup round of 16 on Wednesday. Diego Madrigal opened the scoring ten minutes before the break with a superb shot on the turn. Australia's hopes of overturning the deficit were dealt a blow on the hour mark after substitute Tahj Minniecon received a straight red card for an off-the-ball challenge, just five minutes after his introduction. An own goal by Australia defender Luke Devere, whose attempted backward header looped over keeper Dean Bouzanis, extended Costa Rica's advantage eight minutes from time. The Central Americans completed the rout in the additional time through a goal from David Guzman. Costa Rica are third in Group E with three points from two games while Australia face an early exit as they lie at the bottom after suffering two successive defeats. In the other group encounter, Brazil failed to break down Czech Republic defense to share spoils with the Europeans in a goalless draw. Both sides have four points but Brazil remain on top due to their better goal difference.
