Manchester United moved to the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win at Stoke City after 10-man Chelsea slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic on Saturday. At the JJB Stadium, Titus Bramble gave Wigan the lead after 16 minutes when he towered unmarked to head home. Didier Drogba leveled the score shortly after the break when his low shot trickled through the legs of keeper Chris Kirkland. Chelsea keeper Cech was sent off on 51 minutes when he tripped Columbian striker Hugo Rodallega, who scored from the ensuing penalty to restore the hosts' advantage. Paul Scharner wrapped up Wigan's victory with an easy tap-in in stoppage time to hand Chelsea their first defeat of the season.
Giggs impresses for United The Blues, whose 100% record ended, are second in the table with 18 points, behind United on goal difference. Veteran winger Ryan Giggs once again produced a scintillating display to help United overcome Stoke. His low cross found Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov to notch the opener two minutes past the hour mark. A free kick from Giggs, who was also inspirational in the 4-3 victory over Manchester City last weekend, picked out John O'Shea to glance in with 13 minutes remaining. Spanish in-form striker Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick as Liverpool thumped Hull City 6-1 to move third on 15 points.
