Primera Liga holders Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup after Lionel Messi's double helped them crush Athletic Bilbao 3-0 at home on Sunday to complete a 5-1 aggregate victory. The European champions were leading 2-1 from the first leg and further increased the gap when Argentinean winger Messi opened the scoring five minutes after the break in a superb fashion. He picked up a superb back-heel pass from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who made his competitive debut, and jinked into the area before sidestepping a defender and clipping the ball over keeper Gorka Iraizoz. He scored his second of the night on 68 minutes when he converted a penalty after full-back Daniel Alves was felled in the area. Bojan Krkic completed the rout four minutes later when he intercepted a poor back pass from Ander Iturraspe, rounded the keeper and slotted into an empty net. Barcelona will have a chance to win another trophy before the season starts when they meet UEFA Cup winners Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine in the European Super Cup in Monaco on Friday. They will begin the defense of the Primera Liga title against Sporting Gijon on August 31st.
