Liverpool and Inter enjoyed a good UEFA Champions League start beating Marseille and Panathinaikos respectively in the competition's opening round on Tuesday. At the Velodrome in Marseille, a steven Gerrard brace helped Liverpool come back from a goal down to grab a 2-1 win against Olympique De Marseille. The home side started brightly and scored through skipper Lorik Cana in the 23rd minute. However, a lovely move ending with a brilliant Gerrard shot from outside the box handed Liverpool the equalizer on 26 minutes. Six minutes later Ryan Babel won his team a penalty and Gerrard stepped up confidently to put Liverpool in front. The Hosts pushed for a leveler in the second half but Liverpool easily held on their lead to win the game's three points. Also in group D Atletico Madrid kicked off their Champions League campaign with an impressive 3-0 win against PSV Eindhoven in Holland.
The Spaniards totally outclassed their hosts throughout the whole game where a Sergio Aguero double and a second half strike from Maniche sealed the win for Javier Aguere's men. In Athens, Jose Mourinho had a perfect European start with Inter against Panathinaikos. The Italian champions easily beat the Greeks 2-0 with goals coming from Brazilian duo Mancini and Adriano. Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic produced a breathtaking display dishing out superb assists for both goals. In the same group B, Werder Bremen could only manage a disappointing goalless draw against Cypriot newcomers Anorthosis Famagusta in Germany. The Bundesliga side never looked like scoring and Famagusta did well to earn their first ever Champions League point.
