Chelsea were held to a 1-1 home draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the London derby, while Liverpool played out a goalless draw with Aston Villa. Juliano Belletti gave Chelsea the lead after 28 minutes at Stamford Bridge when he met Deco's corner with a left-footed flick. Darren Bent capitalized on Frank Lampard's awkward backpass to steer home the equalizer at the stroke of half-time. At Villa Park, Liverpool, who were missing Steven Gerrard, lost Fernando Torres inside the opening half hour due to injury. The Reds failed to grab their third straight win as Villa held on to the draw. Elsewhere, Shaun Wright-Phillips made a tremendous return to Manchester City as he scored twice in the Citizens' 3-0 win at Sunderland. Liverpool and Chelsea are jointly on top of the table with seven points from three games. City come third with six points.
