In a sad night in Switzerland, the co-hosts became the first team to be eliminated from the EURO 2008 tournament after losing to Turkey 2-1 in a flaming match that was only cooled down by the pouring rain in Basel. The defeat was Switzerland's second, which means that even if they do the impossible and beat Portugal, they will still fall short on points. While Switzerland were the first team to say good bye, Portugal moved on to be the first team to book a place in the quarter-finals after a commanding 3-1 win over the Czech Republic. Man of the Day: Semih Senturk On a night that the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco, Petr Cech and Nihat Kahvechi were all playing, it was Turkish substitute Semih Senturk who made the difference. Semih took the field as a halftime substitute when his side was down 1-0. Since his introduction, Turkey became more active upfront and their perseverance was rewarded when they scored the equalizer in the 57th minute. Semih connected with a Nihat cross and headed the ball powerfully past Swiss keeper Diego Benaglio to pave the way for a dramatic victory. Play of the Day: Portugal's first goal/Switzerland's only goal Two plays are vying for the Play of the Day. The first was Deco's opening goal for Portugal. Ronaldo sped through the defense and tried to round Cech. The goalkeeper blocked superbly with his foot but the ball ran free to Deco on the left. Cech didn't give up and pounced on Deco's effort, only to get a piece of it. The Barcelona star put it in the net at the second attempt. The second Play of the Day was Hakan Yakin's goal for Switzerland for which he was set up by a puddle of rain water on the field rather than his teammate Eren Derdiyok. A 30-minute downpour that began soon after kickoff made conditions in the first half almost unplayable as the increasingly rain-sodden surface became dotted with puddles.
Ronaldo and Quaresma combined for Portugal's third goal As the game was about to be abandoned, Derdiyok broke free down the right and entered the area, forcing keeper Volkan Demirel out of his goal. Derdiyok side-stepped the sliding Demirel and sent a low cross. The ball went right into a goalmouth puddle and stopped right in front of Yakin who slotted home from point blank range. Goal of the Day: Arda Turan's winner for Turkey Arda was almost non-existent throughout the game, but he stepped up when he was much needed. Two minutes into injury time, both Switzerland and Turkey seemed on the verge of exiting the tournament with a draw that wouldn't be useful to either of them. However, Arda had other things in minded when he latched on to a pass from Tuncay Sanli and raced down the left flank. He then cut in and curled in a shot that took a deflection off defender Patrick Mueller and flew past goalkeeper Diego Benaglio for the winning goal that condemned Switzerland and gave his team hope. Trick of the Day: Scolari introduces Meira Big Phil proved that he was a mastermind when he introduced Fernando Meira with the score 2-1 for Portugal. By adding a defender Scolari was aiming to tighten up his background, but his main objective was to bring more depth to his team by introducing Meira as a 'sweeper' playing behind the midfield players. His presence created a balance as Portugal were able to increase their defensive capacity and deny the Czechs and also act as an anchor for of Portugal's offensives. Meira's highlight was when he sent a stinging through pass to the onrushing Ronaldo who in turn squared the ball to Ricardo Quaresma who scored to maintain Portugal's two-goal cushion.
