The English FA will run an investigation regarding the incident that saw Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard attacked by an angry Tottenham supporter after the FA Cup quarter final clash at White Hart Lane on Monday. An explanation will be requested from Tottenham after two fans invaded the pitch to interrupt Chelsea players' celebrations after the 2-1 win, one of which aimed a punch at the England midfielder before being repelled by stewards. "These scenes were totally unacceptable and we will be contacting Spurs as a matter of priority, "an FA spokesman said on Tuesday. "We want to establish what were the safety and security provisions in place for the game and to confirm what action was taken against the fans who ran onto the pitch. The spokesman confirmed that the two men involved were arrested after the incident. "We understand that both individuals were arrested and we would expect them to be given football banning orders."
Chelsea advanced to the semis after beating Spurs 2-1 Lampard admitted that the situation could have been worse had the Chelsea midfielder not been alert, also claiming that the man could have been drunk. "I saw the guy coming and wanted to keep my eye on him because if I turn my back, I thought I might get one on me," Lampard told Sky Sports. "I just ducked and the stewards got to him. The way he ran at me I think he'd had a few drinks. "I don't think he should have been on the pitch in the first place, but you can understand there's a lot of emotion in a match like this." Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said that the situation has been solved and that the victory is more important. "Maybe the security people slept a little bit. They could never believe the guy could come on to the pitch and chase my players. But it was no problem," Mourinho told reporters. "They (security staff) have to be alert in future. Frank Lampard is ok. He's happy with the victory. Everything else is secondary."
