Manchester United quickly have played down rumors that they are in talks with Real Madrid presidential candidate Juan Miguel Villar Mir over a possible move for Cristiano Ronaldo to the Bernabeu. "Manchester United is astonished with Villar Mir comments," the club said in a statement on Tuesday. "There has been no contact between Manchester United, his election team and or Real Madrid and any suggestion there has is incorrect," the statement added. The Spanish club are currently on the verge of electing a new president, and the Premiership winger has insisted that he was promised a move to Real if Villar Mir wins the elections. "Villar Mir has promised me he will talk to the club and all we have done is talk through an agent," Ronaldo was quoted as saying by Spanish magazine Marca on Tuesday. Nevertheless, United accused Villar Mir of falsely promising the player a move to Spain and insisted that they were used to this kind of electoral propaganda. "Unfortunately these tactics seem to be a common occurrence in elections of this nature," the statement said. The 21-year old star, who recently extended his contract with United until 2010, is currently in Germany preparing for Portugal's World Cup quarter-final against England on Saturday.
