Two-time defending champion Andy Roddick advanced to the second round of the SAP Open in San Jose after claiming a straight sets victory over Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Tuesday. The top-seeded American dropped his opening service game before he raced to a 6-3, 6-4 win in one hour, 19 minutes "I feel like I'm on the verge of playing well, but it's just picking and choosing spots. I didn't have my best stuff tonight, but I got through,” the 23-year-old star was quoted as saying by the ATP official website. “I'm hitting the ball alright now, it's just a matter of feeling comfortable with the ins and outs of the points. I feel OK, close to 100%.” Roddick, who got sick on the court after his Davis Cup defeat to Andrei Pavel last week, seems to have regained his strength as he won his second singles Davis Cup rubber last Sunday before going to San Jose and recording his 11th consecutive victory there. “After last Friday, it's probably the worst I've ever felt after a tennis match, just completely drained. I've been pretty fortunate with how the schedule has worked out, having the day off yesterday and the day off tomorrow, so it shouldn't be a problem anymore," said Roddick. The world number three awaits the winner from the first round match between Lukas Dlouhy of the Czech Republic and Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark. Elsewhere, fifth-seeded James Blake and eighth-seeded Ivo Karlovic became the first two seeds to bow out of the tournament as they fell to China's Yeu-Tzuoo Wang and American qualifier Brian Wilson respectively. Third-seeded Lleyton Hewitt highlights the first round action on Wednesday as the Australian ace opens against Paul Goldstein of the USA.
