Substitute Lionel Messi scored a brace as Barcelona crushed Real Mallorca 3-0 in Primera Liga on Sunday. French midfielder Ludovic Giuly opened the score in the first half before two goals by Messi in the last 15 minutes ensured the win for the Catalan giants. Mallorca defender Eduardo Tuzzio received his marching orders in the 72nd minute after he brought down Barcelona's Portuguese midfielder Deco. The result put Barcelona on the top of the league table with 52 points, 11 points ahead of Valencia who lie in second spot. Giuly put Barcelona ahead in the 39th minute after he met Deco's cross with a close range shot into the back of the net. Messi came off the bench to extend the lead in the 76th minute when he sidestepped a defender inside the 18-yards box before firing a shot into the far corner of the net. The Argentinean teenager sealed the victory seven minutes later after he chipped the ball over the advancing keeper. In other matches, Alaves beat Real Sociedad 3-1, Espanyol defeated Malaga 3-1, Real Betis edged Osasuna 2-0, Sevilla crushed Villarreal 2-0 and Valencia drew 2-2 with Real Zaragoza.
