AROUND 65 of the disabled people in Cairo picketed inside the premises of the Cairo Governorate on wednesday after employees refused to implement a decision by the Governor to give them apartments. "We will not end our strike until the Governor's pledge becomes a reality," said Amin Moftah, one of the protesters. The disabled from Cairo and some other governorates have been protesting outside the Parliament and the Cairo Governorate against perceived negligence on the part of local authorities who refused to give them jobs or houses. Cairo Governor Abdel Azim Wazir last week pledged to give the disabled petitioners, apartments. However, they were given short shrift by administrative officials at their governorates, they complained. Most of those joining in the latest sit-in say they are displaced and unable to earn a living, while State institutions and the private sector do not respect a law specifying five per cent of vacancies for the disabled people. According to the Central Authority for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS), there are approximately eight million people with disabilities, about 10 per cent of the total population of Egypt. Some 74 per cent of them suffer mental disabilities, seven per cent suffer impaired vision, four per cent impaired hearing and 15 per cent physical disabilities.
