Egypt on Monday opened the Rafah crossing point on its border with the Gaza Strip for three days to allow movement of humanitarian cases, Hamas authorities in Gaza said. University students, patients and holders of Arab and foreign residencies would leave the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, Hamas' Interior Ministry said. Hamas said 70,000 Palestinians have applied to travel but only 840 can make their way through every day, accusing Egypt of slowing the work at the Egyptian side of the crossing. Since Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005, Rafah crossing had been operating on daily basis according to a US- brokered protocol between Israel, Egypt and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), until Hamas seized Gaza by force in June 2007.
