Cleaning people's minds - and pockets, too
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 25 - 12 - 2012

WHILE everyone is pretty much concerned with what is happening in Egypt and the crises it is passing through, some private capital owners are indulging in launching TV stations that show nothing but belly dancing or entertainment programmes that keep a considerable portion of the society busy watching them day and night.
In the meantime, and despite a looming critical economic situation, other importers are bringing in top-notch mobile phones that are being constantly bought by consumers who do not even know how to use them.
The motto, raised by those private investors is this: a satellite TV station for every citizen and an advanced cellular phone for each Egyptian.
Instead of launching worthwhile development ventures that benefit the whole nation and its people, those investors - their capital supported by advanced technologies - are only eagerly concerned with launching TV stations worth billions of dollars almost every month that broadcast nothing but frivolous programmes, comic films, soap operas as well as useless talk shows that have become unfortunately popular and attractive among millions of Egyptian and Arab viewers.
These channels, it is safe to say, have only one mission statement: distracting the attention of the people in Arab spring countries and keeping their minds away from what is happening or what will happen today, tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow.
It is quite lamentable to admit the fact these channels with their lucrative programmes have managed to achieve their goals in invading every Egyptian and Arab house and keeping the members of each family busy watching them day and night while paying no attention to whatever is happening on the political street.
Moreover, it also quite regrettable to see that the Egyptians have become obsessed with a futile race for obtaining the latest state-of the-art mobile phones, whose advanced usages and sophisticated functions are beyond the knowledge and use of an average but avid Egyptian consumer.
It is clear that there are those who want the people of Arab Spring countries busily running from one satellite to the other, or spending whatever money they have on complicated mobiles
they cannot use. It is a well planned policy that has been drawn up by some unknown forces whose sole aim is to fill the minds of the Egyptians and Arabs with trivialities and sell these phones to them to clean their pockets in the process.
By the Way:
A beautiful woman is not always kind. But the kind woman is always pretty. (a Pharaonic proverb)
I complained because I don't have a shoe, but I immediately withdrew my complaint when I saw a legless man. (a wise person)
Do not let foolish persons make you sad, but you should feel sad for them.
