CAIRO - A 21-year-old woman gave birth to five babies in the coastal city of Damietta, the local media and a doctor said. Nadia Abdullah el-Berishi was in good condition after having a blood transfusion during her Caesarean section due to bleeding, said obstetrician Sahar el-Sahrawi of Damietta General Hospital where Nadia gave birth. The newborns, two boys and three girls, weigh between 3.2 and 6.17 pounds and are in stable condition, Dr. el-Sahrawi said. They have been placed in incubators in the hospital, which has special premature-baby units, she said. "This is a very rare pregnancy," Dr. el-Sahrawi said. She told Al-Gomhuriya newspaper that she had decided to carry out the Caesarean section at the end of Nadia's eighth month of pregnancy due to the pressure on her kidneys. She said Nadia took fertility drugs in an effort to have a baby after one year of marriage. Nadia, the wife of a farmer in the village of el-Sawallem on the outskirts of Damietta, was admitted to the hospital late Monday, Dr. el-Sahrawi said. "From the initial checkup, I say that none of the babies have any sort of deformities or incomplete organs," she said. The woman's husband, Mohamed el-Sayyed Zeidan, said he was astonished when he found out she gave birth to five babies. “Let God's will prevail,” he said. He named the five babies: Sayyed, Faris, Sahar, Eman and Amal. Mohamed said he wanted to receive assistance from the Government so that the babies could get free milk and diapers for two years.
