CAIRO - The Government has succeeded in getting thousands of its nationals out of Libya, a senior Egyptian official said. “Between February 21 and March 18 190,000 Egyptian citizens returned from Libya,” added Mohamed Abdel-Hakam, Assistant Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs and Egyptians abroad. “In addition, 15,000 Libyans have so far escaped to Egypt via the Salloum border crossing,” Abdel-Hakam told reporters yesterday. The Libyan revolution erupted on February 17. Muammar Gaddafi's forces are believed to have killed and injured thousands of civilians and carried out multiple airstrikes against protesters. “On Friday, 1,666 foreigners entered Egypt via the Salloum border crossing,” added the Egyptian official. “On Saturday, 345 Egyptians crossed from Libya into Tunisia.”
