Constitution panel to meet Army Saturday
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 24 - 02 - 2011

CAIRO - A committee, amending Egypt's Constitution before parliamentary and presidential elections, will meet the military council running the country tomorrow to discuss the proposed amendments, one member said on Thursday.
The 10-member committee submitted its final proposal yesterday to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which it will meet on Saturday, at the end of the 10-day period it was given to draft the changes.
"The constitutional amendment committee will meet with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces on Saturday to discuss the proposal, after which it will announce those amendments," Sobhi Saleh, the only Muslim Brotherhood member on the committee, told Reuters during the committee's final meeting. "Anything said before that is guesswork," he said.
The key amendments will dismantle the legal mechanisms, which kept Hosni Mubarak and his ruling party in power for 30 years until an 18-day uprising ousted him less than two weeks ago.
"The constitutional committee for amendments has not released any information about the proposal or the committee's achievements (so far)," legal adviser and committee member Hatem Begatu said, dismissing media reports about the amendments.
The military council running Egypt has promised to hold elections in six months. An Army source has said recently that before the elections, the constitutional amendments would be the subject of a public debate followed by a referendum.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces issued a statement on its website on the social networking website Facebook warning against rumours "to foment sedition among Egyptians".
"The council is following rumours that involve political terms such as counter-revolution. We warn against such things and we renew our pledge to help transfer Egypt into a democratic state," the statement read.
It urged Egyptians to "stick to unity and avoid calls for chaos".
The council has dissolved the Parliament and suspended the Constitution. It also said the Army would rule for six months until presidentialelections, scheduled for September, can be held. It later revealed that the parliamentary polls would precede the presidential ones.
