DAQAHLIYA - A senior police officer and a 70-year-old man have died in Cairo and the Delta Governorate of Daqahliya after contracting swine flu, the first two deaths from the virus this year, health officials said. They said that Major General Moustafa Shafiq, head of the Criminal Investigation Unit in Hurghada City, died in the Police Hospital on Monday night after he had been infected with the disease about four days ago. In the meantime, the officials continued, a 70-year-old farmer died at a Mansoura City hospital, where he had been treated from the (A) H1N1 virus. The officials said three farmers were put in hospitals in Damietta City and Mansoura City with swine flu symptoms after laboratory tests confirmed that they had contracted the virus. A 48-year-old man, identified as Lutfi Mohamed Hassan, and female farmer Moemana Mohamed Abdul Gellil, 45, were quarantined in a Damietta hospital with symptoms of the flu, the officials said. In Mansoura, a farmer identified as Hamdi Abul Farah was rushed to Sherbin Hospital after he had been diagnosed with the flu, they said.
