SHARQIA - A curfew was imposed Monday in an Egyptian Delta town after clashes between two rival candidates' supporters left four people dead, according to local witnesses. Police cordoned off Mashtoul Al Souq in Sharqia, around 80km north of Cairo, after clashes sparked off by electoral rivarlies, they added. Six others were injured in violence. The witnesses said that the clashes had erupted when a car driven by a supporter of the ruling party's candidate hit a follower of the other candidate, causing injuries to him. Afterwards, both candidates' supporters exchanged fire. Several clashes were reported in Egypt's legislative elections, which local monitors said were marred by irregularities including vote fraud. In the Upper Egyptian town of Assiut, meanwhile, police used tear gas to disperse hundreds of Islamists' supporters who gathered outside the security directorate to protest what they alleged rigged elections, according to local sources. No candidate from the Muslim Brotherhood, which is Egypt's influential-but-banned opposition group, has won in Sunday's elections, according to the initial results released on Monday. The final results will be announced on Tuesday.
