Staff report:
CAIRO, July 18, 2018 - President Abdel Fattah El Sisi reassured a senior Italian government official that the Cairo government was fully committed to bringing to justice those behind the killing of an Italian student in Giza two years ago, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said Wednesday.
Giulio Regeni, a 28-year-old Italian student, was found murdered in an abandoned Giza street on February 3, 2016.
President Sisi stressed the need to continue close co-operation between investigators of the two countries to unravel the mystery behind Regeni's murder, Ambassador Radi said, after a meeting between the president and visiting Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini.
President Sisi confirmed Egypt's full commitment to working with the Italian authorities on establishing the identity of the perpetrators and bringing them to justice, Ambassador Radi said after the talks, which were attended by Interior Minister Police Major General Mohamed Tawfiq, Intelligence Chief Abbas Kamel, and the Italian Ambassador to Cairo Giampaolo Cantini.
Minister Salvini praised the ongoing co-operation between the Italian authorities and the Egyptian prosecutors, who he said had been working together on the Regeni case.
He added that the Egyptian authorities were fully co-operating with the Italian officials at every level, to find out what happened to Regeni.
The Sisi-Salvini talks also dealt with a host of regional and international issues of mutual concern and ways of strengthening Egyptian-Italian ties in all domains including joint counter-terrorism efforts, Ambassador Radi said.
President Sisi and Mr Salvini reviewed the latest developments pertaining to the two countries' efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis and to combat illegal migration via the Mediterranean Sea, the presidency spokesman said.
Regarding the Libyan crisis, President Sisi and Mr Salvini agreed on the need to rebuild the country's state institutions including its national army, parliament and government, in accordance with a UN-brokered agreement that was concluded in the Moroccan coastal town of Skhirat on December 17, 2015.
The deal calls for establishing a nine-member presidential council that will form a national unity government.
Mr Salvini, praised the Egyptian-Italian ties and said that his country valued the efforts of the Cairo government to find a political settlement to the Libyan crisis.
He also praised the Egyptian efforts to combat terrorism and illegal migration.
Mr Salvini said that Rome would host an international conference on combatting terrorism and illegal migration soon.
The 20th International Conference on Irregular Migration, Organised Crime and Terrorism will bring together leading scientists, researchers and scholars, from around the world.
