Staff report: CAIRO, June 5, 2018 - Egypt condemned in the strongest terms the Islamic State (IS) suicide bombing that targeted a gathering of Afghanistan's top preachers on Monday in Kabul, killing at least 14 people and injuring 20 others. A statement released by the Foreign Ministry yesterday expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery. The statement said the Egyptian government and people stand by the government and people of Afghanistan in the face of terrorism that targets security and stability in the country. The statement pointed out that this shameful crime came in the wake of the Afghan Ulema Council's issuance of a fatwa that prohibits suicide attacks as they have no ground in Islamic Shari'a law. It asserts that these terrorist groups have nothing to do with the moderate teachings of Islam and that all countries have to collaborate to face them. The attack occurred near the main entrance to a large tented compound in the Afghan capital, where about 2,000 Muslim clerics had assembled to deliberate on the war and attacks by the Taliban and the IS, which are battling the Afghan government as well as US and allied troops.
