Egypt has planted over 18,000 trees in Cairo and the Delta governorates of Kafr El-Sheikh and Daqahliya as part of the fourth phase of the "100 Million Trees" presidential initiative, the Ministry of Local Development has announced.
Egyptian Minister of Local Development and acting Minister of Environment, Manal Awad, reviewed a report on the executive status of the initiative, which aims to increase green spaces and improve the environmental quality and urban appearance of the governorates.
"The presidential initiative aims to support the state's efforts in confronting climate change and achieving sustainable environmental development in various governorates," Awad said in a statement.
The report detailed the planting of 300 trees along the Shaarawy axis in Cairo's Sayeda Nafisa area, including 19 jacaranda trees and 40 Acacia nilotica trees, alongside 2,000 ornamental seedlings.
In Kafr El-Sheikh governorate, 5,845 fruit and ornamental trees were planted through self-help and community participation.
In Daqahliya governorate, 12,479 trees were planted in the districts of East and West Mansoura, Gamasa, and the centre of Aga, as part of the governorate's plan for afforestation and urban coordination.
Awad stressed the need for continued coordination with the executive bodies in the governorates to follow up on the implementation rates and to adhere to the specified timeline, as well as to ensure the preservation of the newly planted trees. She added that these efforts are in line with the state's direction towards enhancing environmental sustainability and improving air quality, in light of Egypt's Vision 2030.
