Egypt, EU discuss enhanced cooperation on food security, domestic trade
Published in Daily News Egypt on 28 - 09 - 2025

Sherif Farouk, Egypt's Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, met on Sunday with Angelina Eichhorst, Head of the European Union Delegation to Cairo, to explore avenues for strengthening cooperation between Egypt and the EU in food security and domestic trade.
The meeting was attended by Eva Staminova, Programme Officer for Agriculture and Health at the EU Delegation. Representing the Egyptian side were Walid Abou El-Magd, Deputy Minister of Supply; Hossam El-Garhy, Assistant Minister for Oversight; Ahmed Kamal, Assistant Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry; and Doaa Nabil, Assistant Head of the Internal Trade Development Authority.
Minister Farouk outlined the ministry's key priorities, highlighting the government's ongoing efforts to secure strategic food commodities, improve the efficiency of the food subsidy system, and implement the unified subsidy card project—an initiative described as a significant leap toward enhancing subsidy management.
He also emphasized that the ministry's future plans include projects aimed at modernizing domestic trade infrastructure and accelerating digital transformation. These initiatives, he noted, are vital for reinforcing Egypt's food security architecture and contributing to broader sustainable economic development goals.
Farouk stressed that cooperation with the EU is integral to Egypt's national strategy to develop robust commodity circulation systems, streamline supply chains, enhance quality standards, and expand access to international markets. He described the EU as a strategic partner in achieving long-term food security objectives.
In response, Ambassador Eichhorst expressed appreciation for the ministry's collaboration and reaffirmed the EU's commitment to supporting Egypt's evolving role as a regional hub connecting diverse markets. She reiterated the EU's support for Egypt's efforts to improve supply chain resilience, benefiting both consumers and exporters.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to maintain close coordination and consultation to advance their shared objectives and further deepen cooperation in key strategic areas.
