Egypt, France address Gaza crisis, Lebanon instability
Published in Daily News Egypt on 14 - 07 - 2024

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelaty met with French Presidential Advisor for the Middle East Anne-Claire Legendre on Saturday to discuss critical regional issues, including the conflict in Gaza, the situation in Lebanon, and the need for enhanced regional cooperation.
The officials expressed grave concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and stressed the urgency of achieving a ceasefire. Abdelaty outlined Egypt's efforts in mediating a truce, facilitating prisoner exchanges, and delivering aid to the affected population. He also highlighted the challenges posed by Israeli restrictions on humanitarian access, urging the international community to uphold its responsibilities.
Legendre detailed France's diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire and garner international support for the Palestinian cause. Abdelaty reiterated Egypt's commitment to a two-state solution and the establishment of an internationally recognised independent Palestinian state.
The deteriorating situation in Lebanon was also a central topic. Abdelaty voiced Egypt's concern about the escalating violence and its potential to spill over into neighbouring countries. He reaffirmed Egypt's support for Lebanon's security and stability, stressing efforts to prevent the Gaza conflict from destabilising the region further.
Legendre echoed Egypt's concerns and supported international efforts, particularly those led by France and the United States, to de-escalate tensions in southern Lebanon. Abdelaty reiterated Egypt's call for a swift end to Lebanon's presidential vacuum, emphasising the importance of electing a new president through a democratic process reflecting the will of the Lebanese people.
Legendre praised Egypt's role in maintaining regional security and stability, highlighting the ongoing collaboration between Egypt and France on various issues. She expressed particular concern about southern Lebanon and called for collective action to restore calm in the region.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from both Egypt and France to address the pressing challenges facing the region and to promote peace, stability, and prosperity for all.
