Cairo hosts talks for Gaza ceasefire
Published in Daily News Egypt on 08 - 07 - 2024

A high-level US delegation, led by CIA Director Bill Burns, arrived in Cairo on Monday for ceasefire talks related to the Gaza conflict. Simultaneously, Israeli TV Channel 7 reported that Ronen Bar, head of the Shin Bet internal security service, also flew to Egypt to continue negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
Hamas, the Islamic Resistance Movement, awaits an Israeli response to its ceasefire proposal. Recently, Hamas accepted a significant portion of an American plan designed to end the nine-month-long aggression against the Gaza Strip.
Additionally, Palestinian officials engaged in discussions with Israel through Qatari mediators. They assured Hamas that a response would be provided within days.
Despite obstacles posed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hamas remains flexible and positive in its efforts to facilitate an agreement.
The movement called on the mediators to "intervene to put an end to Netanyahu's tricks and crimes," and called on the international community and the United Nations to "stand up to their legal and humanitarian responsibilities and put pressure to stop the crime of genocide against our people, and hold the occupation leaders accountable for their crimes."
Hamas called on the people of the Gaza Strip "to beware of the enemy's army's machinations, and not to fall prey to the psychological warfare waged by Netanyahu and his army." It said: "We affirm that our people will not be deceived by these attempts, and will fail them as they failed all previous attempts."
In a related context, the Ministry of Health in Gaza announced on Monday that the death toll from the war in Gaza had risen to at least 38,193. The ministry said, in a statement, that it counted among those who arrived at hospitals 40 dead and 75 injured during the last 24 hours until Monday morning. It pointed out that the total number of wounded has reached 87,903 since 7 October 2023.
On the ground, the Israeli occupation army announced that 18 soldiers were injured, including 13 in the Gaza Strip, during the past 24 hours. According to the latest data published by the Israeli army on its website, the number of soldiers wounded since the beginning of the war reached 4,114, up from 4,096 on Sunday.
According to data, 680 soldiers and officers have been killed since the beginning of the war on 7 October 2023, including 324 in ground battles in the Gaza Strip.
