Egypt's Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad participated on Wednesday in a high-level virtual roundtable of climate discussions in France to discuss climate issues related to mitigation, adaptation, financing, losses, and damages, and the leadup to the Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP 27) in Sharm El-Sheikh this November.
Fouad stressed the need to redouble global efforts to confront the challenges of climate change and build on what has been achieved in climate action.
"Countries [should] fulfil their commitments, and Egypt will update its national contribution plans for global warming emissions and will finalise them during the first half of 2022," Fouad said.
The minister also pointed to the importance of proactive thinking to achieve the ambitions of mitigating the effects of climate change by creating a climate dialogue, continuing discussions, and helping countries to finish updating their plans for national contributions according to their national needs and priorities.
She further praised the recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the role of scientific research in finding appropriate solutions and practices to confront the effects of climate change, noting Egypt's keenness to work with all parties to find appropriate mechanisms for adaptation.
Fouad concluded by stressing the need to take into account the social dimension and development processes in mitigation plans, raise ambition and modernise national contributions, preserve the progress achieved in the field of adaptation, and build on it with more efforts and initiatives while recognising the important role of science and politics in advancing climate action efforts.
