Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Atty met, on Monday, with Hungarian Ambassador to Egypt András Kovács.
The meeting discussed strengthening the areas of cooperation between the two countries in the field of water resources and irrigation, including projects of water lifting stations and sewage treatment.
During the meeting, Abdel Atty welcomed the ambassador, and said that the two countries possess many experiences relating to water issues, which can be exchanged between the two countries.
He also briefed Kovács on the measures taken by his ministry to improve and develop irrigation systems nationwide, including those projects to rehabilitate canals. Other projects include the conversion to modern irrigation systems, and the reuse of agricultural wastewater.
Abdel Atty pointed to Egypt's aspiration to continue the process of cooperation and exchange of experiences with Hungary in these areas.
Kovács, who is also the non-resident ambassador to Sudan, South Sudan, Eretria, and Chad, conveyed the Hungarian President János Áder's invitation to Egypt to join an international coalition for water and climate. This is one of the international initiatives that mainly aim to accelerate the achievement of the sixth goal under the UN's sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The coalition also focuses on developing sustainable solutions and adopting rational policies to deal with water and climate issues. It works under the leadership of a large number of international organisations concerned, including the World Meteorological Organization.
Moreover, Kovács invited Abdel Atty to participate in an exhibition and conference entitled "Planet Budapest 2021", which is scheduled to be held from 29 November to 5 December 2021.
The conference will take place in the presence of a number of heads of state, with the aim of discussing sustainable management of water, food, energy, transport, and other topics.
The ambassador added that various Hungarian technicians and experts will participate in the fourth edition of the Cairo Water Week, which is scheduled to be held from 24 to 28 October.
