Away from the World Cup hustle, Egyptian athletes participating in the 2018 Mediterranean Games, held in Tarragona, Spain from 22 June to 1 July, won a total of 17 medals, with five gold, six silver and six bronze winners.
Egyptian weightlifter Mohamed Ehab won two gold medals at the men's 77 kg category of the 2018 Mediterranean Games. Ehab won his first gold medal after lifting 162 kg in the snatch competition. The 27-year-old Egyptian weightlifter, who won bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, added another gold medal in the clean and jerk event after lifting 190 kg.
On the first day of the weightlifting competition, Egypt's Ahmed Saad won two gold medals in the snatch and clean and jerk events in the 62 kg men's weightlifting category. Also, Heba Ahmed won the bronze medal in the women's 48 kg clean and jerk event.
In the swimming competitions, Farida Osman fired off a new record in the women's 50-metre butterfly, clocking 25.48 to represent the only swimmer under the 26-second threshold. That came one day after the Egyptian champion won the silver medal in the 100-metre butterfly event in Tarragona. Marwan Al-Kamash won a bronze medal in the men's 200-metre freestyle.
The Egyptian swimming team is competing in 27 competitions for men and four for women. The Egyptian swimming team includes nine swimmers, eight men and a woman.
The other winners included Afaf Al-Hodhod with bronze in shooting, women's 10 metre air pistol; Areeg Rashed with bronze in karate, women's less than 50 kg; Gianna Lotfy with silver in karate, women's less than 61 kg; and Malek Salama with bronze in karate, men's less than 60 kg.
This is the 18th edition of the Mediterranean Games, with 170 Egyptians set to compete in 21 out of the competition's 33 sports, including beach volleyball, bow and arrow, karate, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming, and triathlon.
The medals put Egypt in fifth place in the medal table out of the 14 participating nations. This means that Egypt are currently on par with the overall performance at the previous edition of the tournament in Mersin, Turkey in 2013.
