Egypt's total exports of cotton during from June to August 2017 amounted to 86,200 metric kantars, down from 139,900 metric kantars in June to August 2016, a decline of 38.4%, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS). The agency attributed the decline in cotton exports during this period to the decline in the cotton crop. The CAPMAS report also noted that India was the top importer of Egyptian cotton, as it imported 35,800 metric kantars, accounting for 41.5% of total cotton exports. In a report released on Sunday, CAPMAS stated that the total consumption of local cottons in June through August 2017 reached 43,800 metric kantars, compared to 117,800 metric kantars in the same period of 2016, down by 62.8%. CAPMAS attributed the decline to the cessation of some textile factories. It added that domestic consumption of long and medium staple cotton is about 41,000 metric kantars, which accounts for 93.6% of the total consumed cotton.
