Manama meeting targeted sending political message to Qatar and international community

Egypt started its presidency of the UN Security Council on Tuesday for the second time during its non-permanent membership in the council, and it will have an initiative and a draft law that bans terrorists from acquiring arms, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zaid told reporters.
Abu Zaid added that the Egyptian initiative will be the first attempt to deal with the issue in the Security Council, and it aims to implement Resolution 2253 issued in 2015, which targets banning terrorists from acquiring arms.
Amid Egypt's presidency, several committees will be reviewed in the frame of sanctions that were imposed by the council on a number of countries, the feasibility of these sanctions to avoid its negatives, and a general session will be held to allow these countries to give their points of views, Abu Zaid said.
He also pointed out that a meeting is going to be held between the Security Council and the Arab League on 28 August at the level of permanent delegates, in light of the previous meeting held in Cairo.
Professor of Political Science at Cairo University Hassan Nafea does not see any importance in Egypt's presidency of the Security Council, as it has its turn according to alphabetical order, like any other country.
Resolutions in the council are being decided by collective voting, and no one single country can affect the decisions. Egypt has only one voice, Nafea added.
Regarding the Qatari crisis, Abu Zaid said that results of Al-Manama meeting are no different from the first meeting in Cairo, and it is not necessary for the meeting to be resulted in measures, pointing out that the meeting targeted sending a political message to Qatar and to the international community.
