The prosecution has detained four policemen at Luxor police station for four days pending investigation into the torture to death of Egyptian Citizen Talaat Shabeb, according to state media. Five other police officers have been detained in relation to the same case. The prosecution decision was made after a medical report was issued Thursday revealing fractures to Shabeb's neck and back that resulted in his spinal cord being severed. The death of Shabeb has sparked anger in Luxor, leading to minor protests and demonstrations in the streets. More than a dozen protesters were arrested in front of the hospital where Shabeb died. There have been several cases of people dying in police custody over the past week, causing anger among the general public, prompting police officials to describe such incidents as isolated incidents. In November, a prisoner died in Luxor police station hours after being arrested on the street by the police.
