A report by IDC research company revealed that the personal computers (PC) market in Egypt registered a reduction in shipments by 32.4% during the second quarter (Q2) of 2015, compared to the same period of the previous year. On the other hand, the tablets market witnessed a less reduction rate, where shipments reduced by 6.1% during the same period. The decline in both markets of PCs and tablets in Egypt began in early 2015, where the PCs shipments registered 116,000 pieces compared to 166,000 for tablets, in the second quarter of 2015. Nakul Dogra, Senior Research Analyst at IDC, said that the main drivers of the decline in the PCs and tablets market is the high rate of inflation and the political instability, in addition to the month of Ramadan. The reduction in the value of the Egyptian pound against the dollar and the regulations of the Central Bank of Egypt to control the dollars deposits has affected the flow of shipments. The PC market would continue to decline during 2015, as IDC expects a decline of 17.3% for the whole year compared to the last year. On the other hand, the market of tablets is expected to recover and achieve growth. Smartphones will continue to acquire the share of PCs and tablets in Egypt, especially since applications and websites are customised for smartphones and made it easier for users to access information on the go. The report explains that smart phone shipments would achieve a growth of 45.5% in 2015. As for the market share of the producing companies in the PC market in Egypt, Dell topped the market in Q2 of 2015 with a market share of 23.5%. It was able to put HP in the third place in the market. The HP market share has declined from 25.2% in the Q1 of 2015 to 12.4% in Q2 of the same year. As for Lenovo, it maintained second place with a market share of 20.6%. As for the share of manufacturers in the tablet market, Lenovo has acquired first place, although its share declined from 30.2% in the Q1 of 2015 to 24.7% in the Q2 of the same year. Samsung was not far from this, as it registered a share of 23.8%, while Apple came in the third place, as the number of its shipments in the market amounted to 9.1%.
