Court postpones decision to re-open ‘Trial of the Century'
Published in Daily News Egypt on 02 - 04 - 2015

The Court of Cassation's decision to reopen former Hosni Mubarak's case of killing protesters during the 18-days of the 25 January revolution was postponed to 7 May on Thursday.

Last November, the Cairo Criminal Court had ordered the acquittal of Mubarak, his sons Gamal and Alaa, and former Minister of Interior Habib Al-Adly, along with six of his aides on charges of inciting and aiding the killing of protesters.

The Court was scheduled to look into the case once again on 2 April after the Public Prosecution demanded the reopening of the murder charges held against Mubarak since the 25 January Revolution.
In their defence testimonies before the Cairo Criminal Court, Mubarak and Al-Adly both previously denied they had ordered the killing of protestors.

Mubarak was arrested In April 2011, and the "The Trial of the Century" was first held on 4 August 2011 while Mubarak has initially been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2012. In 2013, the Court of Cassation accepted Mubarak's appeal and ordered a retrial before a different Criminal Court.

Both Mubarak and Al-Adly had previously denied issuing orders to kill protesters during the 25 January Revolution in their defence testimony before the Cairo Criminal Court.

Mubarak was also accused of harming public funds through the exportation of natural gas to Israel. In May 2014, Mubarak was sentenced to three-years in prison on embezzlement charges. The sentences were dropped in January while the two sons were released 26 January.

Meanwhile, Al-Adly was released on 25 March.
