A hot air balloon carrying 20 tourists crashed near Luxor early on Tuesday morning after the fuel supply caught fire, a security official told state-run news agency MENA. The official reported that the balloon fell from 300 metres in the air, killing 19 and injuring two, one of whom was the Egyptian pilot. The other passengers were tourists from France, the UK, Japan and Hong Kong as well as an Egyptian. The balloon belonged to Sky Cruise Airship and Balloon, according to the MENA report, but Sky Cruise could not be reached to confirm this allegation. Prime Minister Hesham Qandil announced on his official Facebook page that he has contacted the governor of Luxor and has ordered the Ministry of Civil Aviation to form a committee to investigate this incident. The Ministry of Civil Aviation is responsible for ensuring the safety of all hot air balloons, according to Deputy Minister of Tourism Mafhoud Ali. Neither the Ministry of Tourism nor the Ministry of Civil Aviation could be reached for comment.
