Leading opposition figures accused of espionage
Published in Daily News Egypt on 05 - 12 - 2012

Prosecutor General Tala'at Abdullah has referred a complaint accusing leading opposition figures of espionage and attempting to overthrow the regime to State Security Prosecution for investigation.
Lawyer Hamed Sadeq filed the complaint against head of Al-Dostour Party Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the Judges' Club Ahmed El-Zend, former presidential candidates Hamdeen Sabahi and Amr Moussa, in addition to head of Al-Wafd Party El-Sayed El-Badawi.
Sadeq and the State Security Prosecution were unavailable for comment.
Tarek Tohamy, Al-Wafd Party board member, confirmed that the complaint was filed against ElBaradei, El-Zend, Sabahi, Moussa and El-Badawi. He also said that the prosecutor general referred the complaint for investigations. However, Tohamy said El-Badawi has not received any official notification yet.
He added that if El-Badawi is called for investigations, it would put president Morsy in a difficult position. “If this happens, we would ask the reason for Morsy's visit to the US a few months before the presidential elections. We would also ask about the sources that funded Morsy's huge presidential campaign."
Al-Ahram reported that Mohamed El-Omda, former MP, filed a similar complaint. El-Omda could not be reached for comments.
Heba Yassen, media spokesperson for the Popular Current, said the complaint confirms that the new government is adopting the same policies of the old regime, by filing malicious complaints to stop opposition figures. She added that Sabahi, founder of the Popular Current, has not received an official call for investigation.
ElBaradei's office manager Rania Azzab said she could not confirm nor deny the validity of the complaint.
Malek Adly, human rights lawyer, said the complaint lacks the required evidence and accused the lawyer who filed the complaint of being mentally retarded. “Sadeq filed a previous lawsuit claiming that Mubarak was dead and that the one is prison right now is another person."
