CAIRO: Thousands of Egyptians are rallying in the Mediterranean city of Port Said, saying that its residents were not behind a deadly soccer riot earlier this month that killed 71 people. Some of the protesters traveled from Cairo to Port Said on Friday to express their solidarity with the city. Supporters of the Cairo-based Al-Ahly team were attacked by fans of the local Al-Masry club who rushed the field at the Port Said stadium after a league match. Some Egyptians have boycotted the city since the violence, blaming Port Said residents for the violence and deadly stampede. The military recently delivered supplies to the city after residents complained of a temporary food shortage. Lawmakers have blamed police negligence for the deaths. Activists have accused the police of complicity.
