CAIRO: The Abdin Misdemeanor Court on Sunday sentenced Cairo Governor Abdel-Azim Wazir to one year in prison for not carrying out a verdict issued by the Administrative Court. In addition to dismissing Wazir from his current post, he was ordered to pay LE 5,001 in temporary compensation, according to media reports. A lawyer named Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim had been granted a verdict that committed Wazir to announcing the results of the local council elections of Dar El-Salam and El-Basatin constituencies. However, Wazir, a former law professor, did not abide by the ruling, the court said. The court, led by counselor Sherif Ismail, said, “All aspects of the misdeed were proven against the governor who procrastinated, as a civil servant, in performing his duties and did not respect the sovereignty of the judiciary.” On his part, Wazir told reporters following the court hearing that the court order in question had already been put into force. Wazir further claimed that an administrative mistake was committed by the legal affairs department at the municipality. The department, according to him, did not present before the court the documents proving the timely execution of the previous court order. The verdict against Wazir can be appealed before a higher court.
