11-year-old girl has a brush with death after FGM surgery, nurse faces punishment

CAIRO: Shaimaa Ramadan Saad, 11, narrowly escaped death Saturday morning after suffering heavy blood loss following FGM surgery. The nurse performing the surgery was reportedly detained.
Shaimaa hemorrhaged for nearly 13 hours before doctors at Fayoum's Etsa Hospital could save her.
Hanan Mohammed Kamel, the nurse who performed the operation, was reported to the authorities by First Under Secretary to the Minister of Health in Fayoum Dr. Hussein Sweify Abou Taleb, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm daily.
However, an official from the Etsa prosecutor's office told Daily News Egypt that the nurse has not been detained.
Abou Taleb told Daily News Egypt that he reported the case to the police and left it up to them to inform the prosecutor s office in Etsa.
He also said that he intends to give her the punishment she deserves because she performed an operation that is "legally and religiously prohibited. She does not have the right, experience or license to perform this kind of operation, he added.
The nurse, who works in a hospital in El Hossania district, had performed FGM surgery on nine other girls, including Entesar Helmi Abdel Tawab and Abeer Thabet Agami.
After the surgery, Shaimaa started hemorrhaging. The nurse attempted to stop the bleeding and performed a blood transfusion, but her attempts were unsuccessful.
Dr. Mahmoud Abdel Shafy and Dr. Mustafa Ibrahim, gynecologists at Etsa Hospital, performed an operation to save Shaimaa s life after she was rushed to hospital by her parents.
Dr. Naguib Ahmed Abdel Malak, the general manager of Etsa Hospital, told Daily News Egypt that this nurse worked in a different hospital in El Hossania district, she performed the [FGM surgery] on Shaimaa along with the other girls, but only Shaimaa suffered complications.
Shaimaa s parents brought her to our hospital and we saved her, he continued, adding that he also reported the incident to authorities.
